Transforming a home with natural stone
Dictating design aesthetic through stone profiles
Natural stone is a statement. It’s one of the most exciting and character-filled parts of a home, and with every slab being unique it can be the design element that dictates the aesthetic of your home. Regardless if you select natural stone or man-made stone, the fabrication cost to achieve the edge profile is almost the same, so it’s a worthwhile investment. Natural stone can be very robust and durable for the hardworking parts of your home, and it also ages beautifully over time.
Now let’s talk about the endless fabrication details - the edges and profiles…
Double Bullnose
The double bullnose stone profile is created by a rounded edge on both the top and bottom of a stone edge, resulting in a bench top that looks like two beautiful pieces stacked together. This profile creates a soft, curved finish, and a more organic, minimal aesthetic. Paired with a simple joinery profile, the double bullnose is an elegant addition to your home, like this bar design in West Pennant Hills House. The natural stone splashback runs all the way up to the upper joinery, and displays the incredible detail in this Verde Calcatta Marble.
Mitred Edge
A mitred edge profile is created by joining two pieces of stone at a 45-degree angle, which forms a seamless, continuous edge and the appearance of a single, chunky slab of stone. We use this profile when we want to showcase a beautiful stone or in this case, to create the perfect edge for the semi- recessed basin in this bathroom in Mosman House Three. The stone splash back here has a beautiful etched border and curved corners, with just the right amount of contemporary and traditional.
Pencil Round
The pencil round profile is a timeless and subtle profile with a slightly rounded edge. It is also the most cost effective profile for a stone mason to manufacture which is good to know if your budget is more conservative. Its versatility complements a wide range of styles, making it a preferred choice for many.
Waterfall Edge
Resembling a cascading waterfall, this stone profile is dramatic, ornate and sophisticated. A waterfall edge profile is ideal for more traditional style kitchens, like Neutral Bay House, and for unveiling the intricacies of natural stone. This kitchen island, designed for entertaining, is the feature of the kitchen with your full attention captured by the stone and its repetitive smooth edge.
Custom profiles
Custom edges can be designed to match the concept of your project, or be completely bespoke. The options are endless; from intricate designs, personalised shapes, and distinctive profiles.
Our favourite custom edge is what we refer to as the “sandwich”. If you want to be more technical it’s a bullnose, followed by a laminated edge, followed by another bullnose but that’s a bit of a mouthful (excuse the pun). If you have an existing profile in your home that you love and want to match, our incredible stonemasons can replicate it.
